2021 Update
The new Blueprint Jordan River is a comprehensive and action-oriented vision for Utah’s longest urban parkway, updated to address new and emerging opportunities and challenges. Building off extensive public and stakeholder engagement in 2020, Envision Utah worked with local experts to develop an action plan with hundreds of targeted strategies to meet eighteen priority goals across seven topics. The much-anticipated release of the Blueprint is scheduled for spring 2022, following adoption by the Jordan River Commission Governing Board and Interlocal Agency Council.
In 2008 Envision Utah partnered with Salt Lake County and other stakeholders to produce the Blueprint Jordan River, the first comprehensive effort to develop a publicly supported vision of the entire Jordan River corridor. It includes an implementation framework to transform the once-neglected river corridor into a defining regional amenity. The visioning process brought thousands of residents and their leaders together to capture "big ideas" about the river and explore how to realize them.
The vision's big ideas include:
A contiguous lake-to-lake blue-green trail completing the 45-mile Jordan River Parkway trail and removing obstacles to boating the entire river corridor
Creation of the Jordan River Commission
Open space preservation and a 20-mile linear nature preserve
Regional and neighborhood river centers—mixed-use villages at developed areas that may include housing, restaurants, river-oriented shops, and small offices
Enhanced regional access tying the Parkway to transit, bicycle routes, and improved parking
Environmental education
One of the most significant results of the blueprint was the formation of the Jordan River Commission (JRC), a nonprofit that spearheads and supports implementation work in partnership with municipalities, community organizations and citizens. One of the JRC’s key responsibilities is to periodically update and refresh the blueprint. Over a decade later, Envision Utah will use its nationally-recognized process to lead the outreach efforts for the refresh.
