What will Madison County look like in 50 years?
Madison County is a rural county in Eastern Idaho that includes Rexburg and Sugar City. Citizens of this area face unique challenges as a rural community with a large and growing university that is Brigham Young University-Idaho. In 2013 Envision Utah kicked off Envision Madison, a visioning process that brought citizens together in a process that explored potential decisions to shape the county’s future growth.
Over 600 residents came together and weighed in on questions like, how can the Rexburg and BYU-Idaho best work together to accommodate student housing needs and create a vibrant central city that everyone can enjoy? How can the area develop jobs that will allow young people to stay in the community long term? What will activate the downtown and blend with the scale and charm of existing buildings and surrounding neighborhoods?
The complete visioning process also included a values study, several public workshops, an online survey, and convened three stakeholder groups that helped to identify the best planning strategies that resonated with Madison’s citizens and stakeholders.
The final vision principles for Madison County focused on working toward enhanced community recreation and tourism, prosperous community and jobs, affordable, convenient, and safe communities, and keeping a productive and supportive relationship between BYU-Idaho and the community.
