Envision Utah Celebrates Women’s History Month

At Envision Utah, our board members bring a wealth of experience, passion, and dedication to our mission of creating beautiful, prosperous, healthy, and neighborly communities. Their leadership is instrumental in shaping the future of Utah, ensuring that varying perspectives guide the decisions that impact our shared spaces. This Women’s History Month, we are celebrating the amazing women that make up our Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Board of Governors. Studies from organizations like the Harvard Business Review has found that well-balanced boards make better decisions. Women bring different perspectives, experiences, and problem-solving approaches that lead to more strategic discussions and innovative solutions. So in honor of this Women’s History Month, we are also proud to spotlight Silvia Castro, one of our Executive Committee Vice Chairs and Executive Director of the Suazo Business Center

Leadership Rooted in Representation

Recently named one of Utah Business’s “CEO of the Year”, Silvia sees this honor as a reflection of not only her journey but of the collective success of the teams and communities she has worked with. “This recognition is both humbling and affirming. It symbolizes the impact of collaborative leadership and the importance of staying true to values,” she explains.

As a vice chair on a traditionally male-dominated board, Silvia views her role as both personally and professionally significant. “To me, this role is about being part of a system where balanced representation leads to stronger outcomes,” she shares. Her position as vice chair reflects Envision Utah’s commitment to creating welcoming communities and the belief that sound decision-making comes from hearing a broad range of perspectives. “It means bringing a different perspective, one shaped by lived experiences that can enrich decision-making, and ensuring that other women and marginalized voices see themselves reflected at the table.”

Continuing the Legacy of Women’s Leadership

Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on the generations of women who have fought for equality and opportunity. Silvia acknowledges the responsibility that comes with leadership, recognizing that she stands on the shoulders of those who paved the way. “Every leadership role I take on is an opportunity to extend that legacy by creating space for others and by challenging the systems that still need to evolve,” she says.

From mentoring young professionals to advocating for policies that promote equity, Silvia is deeply committed to ensuring that leadership remains accessible to all. “I see myself as part of a larger story of resilience and empowerment,” she adds, reinforcing the importance of building a future where every voice is valued.

Advice for Future Leaders

For young women aspiring to break barriers in leadership and executive roles, Silvia offers this advice: “Lead with purpose and courage. Don’t be afraid to bring your full self into the room, even when you feel like you don’t quite fit the mold.” She emphasizes the importance of mentorship, self-trust, and perseverance. “Understand that breaking barriers often means being comfortable with discomfort because that’s where change happens. Most importantly, remember that leadership is not about perfection; it’s about persistence, growth, and lifting others as you climb.”

The Bigger Picture

Silvia serves as one of four vice chairs on Envision Utah’s Executive Committee, which includes other incredible women leaders in our community; Bonnie Jean Beesley, Natalie Gochnour, and Laura Hanson. In an effort to make the best use of the talents of our board members, Envision Utah recently underwent a restructuring of the board committees. There are now three main groups. The Executive Committee which advises on day-to-day governance, such as overseeing budgets and operations. The Board of Directors provide organizational oversight, fiduciary oversight, and strategic planning. Finally, the Board of Governors give their input and expertise on issues and projects faced by the state of Utah. From our Founding Board to our current Board Members, Envision Utah is grateful for the ongoing support and dedication of the individuals and leaders, without whom we couldn’t do what we do.
